TMJ Headaches and jaw pain

What is TMJ?

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint.  The TMJ is a ball and socket joint and plays a critical part  in the functions of chewing, swallowing and talking. The ball part of the jaw joint is part of the lower jaw (mandible).  The mandible is attached to the rest of the head with a sling of muscles only.

Any imbalances in the muscles can cause the jaw joint and surrounding muscles to become incredibly painful. Problems with the TMJ can cause head and neck pain, a locked jaw, difficulty with chewing, eating and popping noises.

Are you experiencing TMJ pain?

Most dentists will agree that TMJ pain can be extremely difficult to treat. TMJ can be caused by asymmetries in other parts of the body.  Sometimes the TMJ will compensate for a rotated pelvis or incorrect foot position.   At Vitality Dental we extensively consult with  our patients so we can obtain a thorough history. Our dentists have also undertaken further post graduate training to help us provide the best outcome for our patients.   Our collaborative approach which includes co-treatment with other health professionals, ensures a high success rate in treating chronic pain.
