Dental amalgam has been used as a filling material for over 150 years. Amalgam is made up of a combination of silver, tin and other metals, combined with 50% mercury. The mercury component is considered to be a cause for concern in some people.
We see many patients who request amalgam removal with tooth coloured fillings for both health and aesthetic reasons. We replace the fillings with either composite fillings or porcelain
In our practice we use a rubber dam to physically isolate the tooth and prevent ingestion of filling particles. Our patients are also provided with oxygen to breathe during the procedure to protect their airways from inhaling mercury vapour.
